Strictly Support Group meets Match Of The Day – A Recap

So on Friday, I entrusted @SerenePingu with refereeing our Strictly Support Group. Seeing that England were playing an international friendly against Peru, she decided to have a World Cup themed chat.

In the first half, she started by asking you all who’s been the best footballer to have appeared on strictly? We had lots of replies. Here are some of her favourites:

In the second half, she asked you which current or former footballer would you like to see appearing on strictly. Here are some of your answers:

https://twitter.com/nic4532/status/472452458212777985

Things soon turned a tad bizarre and she asked you this inspired but strange question as we entered extra time:

We also had a great suggestion of Deborah and Robin’s fabulous quickstep from @Nic4532.

It ended with a penalty shoutout where she asked Strictly has seen many country’s dances over the series from the Spanish Paso Doble to the Brazilian Samba. In a World Cup contest which country would win and which performance would you choose as a victory dance. Here are some of your answers:

I loved reading your chat and must give @serenepingu a huge pat on the back for organising and refereeing such a brilliant chat. If you have any other suggestions for her topics tweet us @scd_support, we’d love to hear from you!

Foxtrot Friday – A Letter To You All

Dear Strictly Support Group, Readers and Supporters,

In this age full of modern day communications, nothing beats a good old fashioned letter, so today’s dance fix is brought to you by good old fashioned pen and paper (well the draft was until we typed it on our blog!)

For today’s Foxtrot Friday, we’re going back a couple of months to see Abbey and Aljaz’s Foxtrot to “Dear Darling” by Olly Murs. When this dance was performed in Week 5 of the last series, we fell in love with Abbey’s dress (and suffered with serious dress envy!)

We loved the dancing as they glided across the floor and felt even though it was performed to a modern song, the whole dance captured the old-school glamour of the foxtrot perfectly.

For us it was pure class and it felt like the perfect dance for us to share with you today to thank you all for being amazing. See this as a little thank you letter from us to you for all your amazing support so far. You make running this blog and page an absolute joy! We hope you enjoy watching it and have a great weekend:

Don’t forget, tonight @serenepingu will be hosting our Strictly Support Group as we’re away for the evening. Join her on @scd_support from 7.30pm to take part.

Strictly World Cup 2014

The mighty mighty Monk Seal

Four years ago : Jill Halfpenny won the inaugural Strictly World Cup, defeating Alesha Dixon in the final.

Two years ago : Kara Tointon won the second Strictly World Cup, defeating Alesha Dixon in the final.

In two weeks time : it all begins again. Will Kara retain her crown? Will Alesha finally elevate herself above that runner-up slot and take the trophy? Or will one of the new contenders who have graced Strictly over the last two series (Natalie Gumede! Louis Smith! Denise van Outen! Mark Benton!) bring a shot of fresh blood to the hands that grip the trophy. Or will it be…I dunno, Matt Dawson or somebody (NO)?

Get your opinions ready, dig your Chelsee Healey branded vuvuzelas out from the back of your wardrobes, and prepare to scratch your Strictly itch in the most self-indulgent way possible – by trying to work out how you’re supposed…

Throwback Thursday – We’re sitting on top of the world!

Today we’re sitting on top of the world and extremely happy! Not only are we spending time with our family, but we’re also visiting the happiest place to live in the UK, cue extra cute comment from my 4 yr old “if Harrogate’s the happiest place to live, will they have lots of stuff I like, like dancing and cupcakes? Otherwise I won’t be happy!” We’re pretty sure they have delicious cupcakes, but weren’t too sure about the dancing part, so decided to search for an extra happy dance for your Throwback Thursday fix.

Some super speedy searching this morning brought us to Penny and Ian’s quickstep. This was a bright, light and gorgeous dance, full of beautiful choreography which never fails to make us smile. Considering this was danced in Week 1, it was a phenomenal routine which we loved. It’s left us feeling on top of the world and smiling πŸ˜€ We hope it does the same for you too:

We’d love to hear what you think of that dance. Tweet us @scd_support or comment in the box below. We look forward to hearing from you.

Flashmob Tour – A review by @serenepingu

When we received a tweet last week to say we’d won the Sadlers Wells Flashmob Twitter competition, we may have squealed a lot ever so slightly, before remembering we were away and unable to go *does her best paso face and stomps like a three year old!* *breathes and composes herself* Luckily, the amazing team at Sadlers Wells let my lovely friend Serene, go in our place. She agreed to review the show for our blog, so here are her thoughts just for you:

Last night, we were lucky enough to be invited to see FLASHMOB at the Peacock Theatre in London and meet some of the stars afterwards. Being huge dance lovers and Strictly fans we were ever so slightly excited, as it meant getting to see the lovely Karen and Kevin dance and meet them after the show.

Dancers and dance fans have been spoilt over the last few years with a wide range of TV shows showcasing some of the best dance talent. Flashmob highlighted this by combining the hugely talented and popular stars of Strictly Come Dancing (Kevin Clifton and Karen Hauer,) Got to Dance (Brosena and Alleviate,) So you think you can dance (Tommy Franzen) and Britain’s Got Talent (Flawless) all together on one stage.

FLASHMOB IS (as described) the show where dance worlds collide. Dance worlds don’t only collide, but also inspire and amaze you with breathtaking routines and performances. Whether you’re a fan of breakdance, freestyle, hip hop, contemporary, Irish, Latin or Ballroom, you’ll find something there just for you. If you love your twitter and social media, like us, you’ll be hooked too!

The first act centres around the story of how friendships are formed between the dancers and you learn why the FLASHMOB came to be. As well as the beautiful dancing from all the cast there are great backdrops and use of social media in the staging, lighting and direction. This part of the show will make you smile, laugh and well up with pure emotion. The dancing will send shivers down your spine and make you want to shimmy and clap along. For us, there wasn’t just one highlight in this act, but lots of them. We especially loved Alleviate’s emotional routine, and would like to get out of bed every morning dancing just like Tommy Franzen. Kevin and Karen’s dancing lit up the stage. It was electric, phenomenal and powerful. Flawless were, well, absolutely Flawless and amazed us with their creative routines. Brosena’s Irish Dancing was pure perfection. It was so watchable it left us wanting more. It’s safe to say we couldn’t take our eyes off the dancing and didn’t blink once!

During the interval we bumped into The Hairy Bikers at the bar. We were very excited and squealed so much (memo to self: next time bring earplugs for anyone we meet or take with us!) They were lovely people to meet and even had a very quick chat with us whilst waiting to be served:

20140529-111542-40542697.jpg

It was then time for us to return back to our seats ready for the Second Act. This was a buffet of delicious dancing with all dance styles imaginable. The opening Smooth Criminal-inspired routine was a feast for us dance fans teasing and treating us with so many different dance styles, we loved it. Kevin’s Paso jacket made a reappearance (we never realised how sparkly it was on TV 😍) with a gorgeous flamenco routine from him and Karen. Their romantic routine to Clown by Emeli SandΓ© was beautiful and had us in tears. Tommy’s solo routine showed this dancer’s unique style of hip hop dance which tugged at our heart strings, made us smile and left us speechless (we loved it!) Alleviate’s airborne dancing was breathtaking and Brosena’s Modern Irish Dancing was toe-tappingly good! The power and acrobatics of Flawless’s dancing amazed us too.

The show made sure there was audience interaction too, with everyone getting involved at the end in one huge FLASHMOB. We may have even attempted a little dance on the concourse on the way home at Euston Station. πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒ

It’s safe to say we loved the show, and meeting the stars afterwards was the icing on the cake. They are all such lovely people to talk to and it’s clear to see they love what they do.

20140529-120129-43289500.jpg

Not only did we loved it, but some very famous faces also tweeted their love for Flashmob too. Here are some of their tweets:

Thank you to the Flashmob Company and Sadlers Wells for hosting a fabulous evening. Huge thanks as well to my lovely friend Cassie for letting us take her place.

From us (my friend Jo and I), the show definitely gets 10/10. If you get the chance to go, don’t turn it down, this show is unmissable! The show is at the Peacock Theatre in London until the 8th June before embarking on a UK tour. To purchase tickets and find out more visit http://www.flashmobtour.com.

Serene πŸ˜€

Introducing my lovely friend, a super strictly fan!

We’ve been a little preoccupied with an event and spending time together as a family over the last few days. Not wanting to deprive you lovely lot, I decided to hand the blog over for one day to the very safe hands of my best friend (and another Strictly Superfan) @serenepingu. She’s mad as a box of frogs, a bundle of energy and a little ray of sunshine. I love her to bits and fully trust her, so here are her thoughts about Strictly!

Hi! My name’s Serene and I’m a Strictly Addict. I can’t dance for toffee, but I’m like a magpie and gravitate towards anything glittery, sparkly and dance-related. Cassie entrusted me with writing posts, tweeting, taking pics and reviewing Flashmob yesterday so she could have a well deserved break in Scotland! All in all we had lots and lots of fun.

I was sent a little questionnaire before today to let you know a bit more about myself:

Name : Serene
Age : 29
Twitter Handle @serenepingu
Likes : Penguins, Strictly, Marshmallows, Glitter, Music and Haribo (together it’s a lethal combination – think roadrunner! – I’m very easily excitable!)
Dislikes : Snakes, Spiders, Fish and Coffee
Favourite Strictly Series all of them, I cannot possibly choose one.
Favourite strictly professionals: Kevin and Karen, such watchable dancers whose performances and technique are incredible. This dance shows that off perfectly, http://youtu.be/0-Uy5VVvmb8.
Favourite Ever Strictly Moment – Susanna and Kevin’s Showdance (neck of steel) *gets out the Kleenex, it could get emotional!*

Most memorable dance on Strictly for you – John and Kristina’s Paso Doble. It had us in stitches, very entertaining.

The tune that’ll make you get up and dance badly: Get Lucky! – Daft Punk
Favourite Dance Style on Strictly I love ballroom, especially Foxtrot and Quickstep, but love a good Salsa or Samba too.
Have you prepared for your big evening at Flashmob Tour? I met a new partner, he needs to improve his framea little:

20140529-014904-6544022.jpg I’ve also found lots of glitter and charged my phone up ready for the big night out.

Serene! Thank you for that insight into your likes and dislikes. Cannot wait to read your review and see your pictures too. I’m just a bit jealous, but we’ll see the show together soon. It seems a good time to introduce Serene, as she’ll be helping me with blog posts, tweets and the Strictly Support Group whenever we’re away. She’s a social media guru and all round good egg so will look after you, we promise.

Tango Tuesday – A Dance Chosen By A Young Strictly Fan

As you probably know, my daughter Bella is quite possibly a bigger fan of Strictly than I am, so when I was searching for a Tango to celebrate Tango Tuesday, I turned to her for some advice.

Bearing in mind she’s four and has only watched one series so far (which she fell in love with) her suggestion was great. She’s chosen (her favourite couple) Susanna and Kevin’s Tango from Week 2.

When they danced this dance she loved it because Susanna had princess hair (her words, not mine!) She even asked me to replicate it at her ballet class (with limited success!)

Susanna and Kevin always gave 100% to whatever dance they did. We loved the energy, passion and aggression in the dance. At first, Bella was unsure, convinced Susanna was grumpy because Craig Revel Horwood was mean to her about her cartwheel the week before! Once we’d explained to her about the character of the Tango, she soon understood and decided to vote for Susanna, as well as Hairy Dave (her other favourite!)

So here it is Susanna and Kevin’s Tango, a dance which will take you to paradise. Enjoy!

Lindy Hop Day – The Day With More Bounce Than The Easter Bunny

We are very very grateful to the world of dance at the moment. Not only does it make us smile and provide us with endless televisual treats in the cold winter months, but also it’s been providing us with some fantastic days as of late. Yesterday we had Tap Dance Day and today just so happens to be World Lindy Hop Day.

Yes, there is a day dedicated to this lively dance, which has more bounce than the Easter Bunny (sorry Bugs!) We have seen several professional Lindy Hops over the last 10 years on Strictly, however in the final of 2009, Chris Hollins, Ola Jordan, Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe performed Lindy Hop together on the dance floor. Its cheeky and fun nature along with tricks, lifts, jumps and spins makes it a real show stopper, so we’ve chosen to show it to you today for your daily Strictly Fix. We hope you enjoy it:

Now you’ve seen the dance, we’d love to hear what you thought of it. Tweet us @scd_support or comment in the box below. We’d love to hear from you.

We’ll also be hosting a Lindy Hop Day Chat from 7.30pm tonight. Join us on twitter @scd_support to take part.

Look forward to hearing from you then.

Cassie 😊

National Smile Month – Yet another poll

Here at the Strictly Support Group, we believe in giving you all the democratic right to vote for your favourite strictly moments at any special occasion, especially when it’s National Smile Month.

For the second of our polls we’d like to know the Strictly moment which makes you smile the most. Simply vote in the poll below, before the 19th June to cast your vote. We’ll reveal the results of all our polls on the 20th of June in the Glittery Toothbrush awards:

Don’t forget to vote! Your blog needs you!

Tap Dance Day – A Strictly Take On The Day’s Events

Believe it or not, today isTap Dance Day! Yes, there really is a day dedicated to this form of dance!

In a change to our usual Smooth Sunday fix, we chose a dance incorporating tap dance, lifts, spins, ballroom and the everything imaginable from the world of dance. It even had a pole in it!

For today’s Strictly Fix, we’re watching the wonderful showdance from Natalie Gumede and Artem Chigvintsev. *jazz hands and shuffles* This dance had flair, panache, fabulous dancing, lifts, tricks, a wonderful tap dance sequence….the list goes on! It’s safe to say we loved it and it is one of our favourite show dances of all time (along with Susanna and Kevin’s gorgeous dance which made our eyes ever so slightly very leaky.)

Here it is just for you to wish you a Happy International Tap Dancing Day, Natalie and Artem’s divine Showdance!

We hope you enjoyed watching that dance. Tweet us what you thought of it @scd_support. We’d love to hear from you.
