Strictly 2016 – A Review of the Strictly Year!

2016 has been a year filled with shocks and surprises both on and away from the Strictly Dancefloor. We are just days away from finding out this year’s champion, and to end what has been a truly epic series, we thought we’d share what we thought have been the defining moments of Strictly 2016!

Ed Balls

Every year has its underdog and this year that title fell to Ed Balls. Yes, week after week we voted to save him after the judges seemed less than impressed by his dancing. He came, he entertained and he summed up what Strictly is all about. I don’t think we’ll ever forget his Gangnam Style Salsa and who else could have landed on the Blackpool Floor whilst sat at a piano which had flames on it? Ed, you may have left Strictly, but you won our hearts and will be remembered for a very very long time!

Len’s Last Series

Early on this series, we learnt that Mr Sev-errrn, Len would be hanging up his judging shoes (or should that be paddles) at the end of this series and would be retiring from the show. We have enjoyed many fantastic Len-isms including him declaring he was a fan of One Direction (until Zayn left) and him telling Ed his Cha Cha Cha was supernatural! We’re pretty sure that this Saturday’s show will be emotional as Len waves goodbye to the Strictly Ballroom. He has always been one for constructive criticism and standing up for the celebrities. We’re pretty sure his replacement will do just the same, but he will be sadly missed.

The most epic theme weeks ever

Theme weeks normally amaze us but this year they were completely epic! We had a wonderful Movies themed week, followed by Blackpool week and then had the most epic one of them all, Musicals Week. All three were novel and went above and beyond what we expected. Strictly does keep getting better and better, and we must congratulate all those involved on a brilliant series (including the theme weeks.)

Pro dances

This year we have been treated to having 17 professional dancers. That has meant that there have been some huge and truly amazing professional dances. One of our favourites has to be this one which really moved us to tears *provides you all with some tissues incase you are prone to emotional outbursts:

Shock exits

There were some very early shock exits! Take for instance, Melvin, Tameka and also Laura who all left the competition with so much more to give. The lovely Will had to quit too, due to personal reasons and results shows became a very tense and emotional time for us all. We’ve never had a series like this series. We loved every single contestant and partnership, which made saying goodbye that little bit emotional.

The Rinder!

If there ever was a contestant who summed up how great it was to learn to dance, it is this guy. His expressive nature and his genuine love of dancing captured the nation’s (and our) hearts. His smile and joy at dancing every week really did make us smile and want to join in along at home too! He has possibly been one of the most expressive contestants and is a man of many expressions! πŸ˜€πŸ˜¬β˜ΊοΈπŸ€“ (They should give him his own Emoji keyboard!)

The Terms and Conditions

The antics in the Clauditorium have made our saturdays. The Terms and Conditions, which in many TV shows would be the most boring part of the show, have become so entertaining they have never failed to make us smile!

The glitter, sparkle and magical costumes

Strictly wouldn’t be Strictly without the brilliant costumes, the glitter and all the sparkle! This year’s costumes have been more sparkly than ever before. They have lit up our TV screens and have made the dances look truly beautiful. The Make-up and hair has been off-the-scale uh-may-zing too (we think even Craig would give it a 10!) Combined with the brilliant choreography and music they have made the performances and Saturday night and Sunday night shows fab-u-lous to watch.

The standard of dancing!

We say it every year, but this year’s Standard Of Dancing has been higher than its ever been before. We’ve had celebrities who’ve been good enough to be professionals from week one (take for instance Danny who we found looked like a pro dancer in week 1)  we had the first perfect scoring Samba ever and we’ve had couples testing their limits (Jo and Ore with that longest fleckerl in the history of Strictly ever!)  We’ve also had injuries as a result (Laura’s ankle) from celebrities pushing themselves to produce such high standards of dancing. Credit has to also go to the professional dancers who have choreographed some challenging routines for all their celebrities to perform and impress us!

So those are the moments that sum up Strictly for us this year. What has summed up Strictly for you? Tell us by tweeting @scd_support or commenting below to let us know. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thought for Thursday – What makes a πŸ”Ÿ performance

A very rare sight! Yes, Craig Revel Horwood really does have a 10 paddle

Last Saturday we saw a Strictly first, the highest ever score awarded in week 4. Yes, Ore and Joanne were awarded not one, not two but three tens and an impressive 39/40 for their Jive! We saw the first 10s of Strictly 2016 and had to apologise to our neighbours for screaming so loudly (admittedly she was so concerned when she heard our screams that she rushed over to make sure we were ok!)

When it comes to giving out tens, we know that some of the judges are more generous than others. Some look at the technique and the overall content of the dance. Some look for the performance value and some seek perfection. It got us thinking, what makes a perfect πŸ”ŸπŸ’ƒπŸ» performance?

For us, great technique and execution alone don’t just score a πŸ”Ÿ in our book. The dance does not have to be perfect but there has to be an element of showmanship. For us, a dance deserves a 10 when it becomes one of those perfect strictly moments where choreography, song choice, costume, performance and storytelling all come together to give us goosebumps!

For us, that happened twice on Saturday, during Danny and Oti’s quickstep *stomps feet that they didn’t get a ten and remembers she needs to go hat shopping to replace the one she ate* and during Ore and Joanne’s truly awesome Jive.

Both these performances not only had challenging choreography which the celebrities mastered but they also were exquisitely  danced to the extent we couldn’t tell the pro from the celebrity. The speed at which they danced made them fly across the ballroom floor (as Bruno would say if they were driving on the M1 they’d get a speeding ticket!) and both pro and celeb were so well matched in their dancing, credit has to go to their amazing professional partners Oti and Joanne for their great teaching of the technique of each dance.

Both dances also were performed brilliantly. Danny captured the role of conductor and looked just like Fred Astaire quickstepping around the Strictly ballroom floor. Ore has a unique ability to be able to capture the character of any performance and make it his own. They are both born showmen and brilliant at storytelling. It comes as no surprise as Danny is an actor, but Ore is a Sports Presenter (so not really used to performing.) That made Ore’s 10s even more deserving in our opinion. He is doing something out of his own comfort zone and he is pretty good at it too!

Strictly wouldn’t be strictly if it wasn’t for the live band and singers, the fabulous costumes and hair and make-up. On saturday night they did an awesome job of bringing all the music to life as always.

I’m going to single out Ore’s song choice and the 1960s theme. As soon as we heard this was going to be the song he and Joanne would perform a Jive to, we were extremely excited. In our opinion, Ore’s personality fitted the song choice perfectly and the band and singers did an amazing job of performing this song (as they did others throughout the night.)

The costume in Ore and Joanne’s dance had a 60s feel. It was simple and made us concentrate more on their dancing than the outfits and hair (as some did on Saturday night.) For many celebrities this could have revealed many dance  disasters, but in this performance it helped us see what an uh-may-zing dancer Ore has become.

In our opinion both these dances on Saturday night deserved 10s for many of the same but also different reasons. One dance did achieve them and deservingly so, whereas the other did not (and may receive a ten this week!) Tens are earned through hard work as well as committing to a character and giving us entertaining performances. Judges will award 10s for different things. Some look at the choreography and technique whilst others look at the overal performance value. Some judges are harder to please than others but ultimately it is us the viewing public whose votes count the most.

Throwback Thursday – A Master(chef)ful Paso Doble For Your Tastebuds!

Tonight sees the launch of Celebrity Masterchef and we’re cooking up a treat for your tastebuds with today’s Throwback Thursday.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month, you’ll probably know that the wonderful Natalie Lowe will be competing and being judged by none other than Gregg Wallace. We’ll be watching the show and having a short Masterchef themed chat from 7pm, however for today’s Throwback Thursday we’re watching the inspirational Paso Doble which won the People’s Strictly this year.

This dance had the perfect recipe for a Paso Doble:

1) It was Strong and Powerful like a Mature Cheddar Cheese

2) It had more Fire than a Scotch Bonnet Chilli Pepper

3) It had traditional choreography and cape work, just like the family lemon drizzle cake recipe!

4) It had great music and drama! Just like the Masterchef kitchen

5) It also had a heart-warming heroic story which made us all a little emotional, just like chopping an onion!

We loved this dance and it’s easy to see why watching it. Here are Cassidy and Natalie with their wonderful Paso Doble.

We’d love to hear what you thought of that dance. Tweet us @scd_support or comment below to let us know.

We’ll be here from 7pm with our Masterchef chat! We hope you can join us then.

30 Day Challenge – Bella’s A to Z of Strictly. R is for Rumba!

I’m only 5, so normally if there’s a Rumba on Strictly, Mummy tells me to close my eyes, because the Rumba isn’t a nice dance for little girls to watch. Last year, I was allowed to watch one Rumba and I really liked it!

I was allowed to watch Frankie and Kevin’s Rumba last year. I liked Frankie’s dress as she looked like a Ballerina and with Kevin together they looked like they were out of a Fairytale.

I liked the music and the dancing as well *sucks thumb* it had a good story to it and the dancing looked beautiful. I would have given it a 10 like Bruno, but the other judges didn’t like it as much. I think I need to tell them when to put out their 10 paddle this year, especially Craig!

If this is what all Rumbas are like, I don’t know why mummy doesn’t always let me watch them *stomps feet and pulls a paso face.* Here are Frankie and Kevin with their beautiful Rumba:

I hope you liked watching that dance. I’d love to hear what you liked about it. Tweet @scd_support or comment below to let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Strictly Support Group – The Election!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you probably know we are a week away from going to the polls for the General Election 2015!

Here at the Strictly Support Group, we love a poll to decide the answers to those tough questions and to crown an overall winner.

We’ve decided to launch our very own Strictly Support Group General Election! Over the next 7 days, we’ll show you some of our all-time favourite dances. Next Thursday we’ll give you all the chance to vote for your ultimate favourite. We’ll then reveal the winner and Prime Minister(s) of the Strictly Support Group!

Today, we’re watching Chelsee Healey and Pasha Kovalev dance their first-class Quickstep! When we first saw this dance back in 2011 we loved it. The story-telling was great, the choreography even better and the dancing was magnificent! It made us want to sing, sing, sing, sing (and vote) from the rooftops it was that great. It even scored 36 points in week 4 of the competition and showed that these two were true contenders.

We loved it and hope you will too. Here are Chelsee and Pasha with their fab-u-lous first class quickstep:

Now you’ve seen that dance we’d love to hear what you thought of it. Tweet us @scd_support or comment below. Are you Team Chelsee and Pasha? What made them so great a partnership for you? Let us know, we’d love to hear from you.

We’ll be back tomorrow for the next candidate in our Strictly Support Group General Election!

Returning Officer of the Strictly Support Group!

Throwback Thursday – Happy Chinese New Year!

Today is Chinese New Year. It’s the year of the goat and we’re pretty sure if this little guy went on Strictly, he’d get 10 from all of our judges, Craig Revel Horwood included.

*Thinks why we’re here* Going back to the subject, as it’s Chinese New Year, we’ll be making sweet and sour chicken later turning back the clock 2 years and watching today’s Strictly Fix from Strictly 2013.

There’s no doubt about it, our professional dancers are incredibly talented and always amaze us with their wonderful routines whilst Strictly is on. This routine was truly wonderful. We loved it for several reasons:

❀️ The costumes and make-up were brilliant. We want a kimono just like that and have to say the male pro dancers looked strong and powerful in their outfits!
❀️ The music, although not oriental really fitted the style of dancing. We never thought we’d say this but this BeyoncΓ© song added atmosphere to the dance.
❀️ The choreography was wonderful and perfectly executed. It was like a bento box full of delights!

We’re pretty sure you will agree, but here are our Geisha Girls and Monks Strictly Professional Dancers performing to BeyoncΓ©’s Halo. We hope you enjoy it:

We’d love to hear what you thought of that. Tweet us @scd_support or comment below. We look forward to hearing from you.

We must also add that it’s the lovely Aljaz Skoranjec’s birthday. So on behalf of all of us, we wish you a very Happy Birthday Aljaz. Here’s some cake we prepared earlier

From all at the Strictly Support Group we wish you a very Happy Chinese New Year or Shinyen Hao!

We’re not around tonight, but join us on Saturday night for a Chinese New Year chat starting from 7.30pm on twitter @scd_support. You just need to follow us to take part. As always, once the chat has finished we’ll put a wonderful recap up on here for you to comment on (if you’re not on twitter.)

Throwback Thursday – This is how to dance a Tango!

For today’s Throwback Thursday, we’re watching Series 9 (2011) champion Harry Judd and Aliona Vilani take to the floor with a thrilling Argentine Tango.

They danced to a song called Asi se baila el tango (meaning This is how to dance the tango in Spanish) and this routine was a true masterclass in Argentine Tango. It was full of passion, tension and aggression and flowed across the floor seamlessly.

We loved Aliona’s dress and the choreography was fab-u-lous. The whole dance was slick, sharp and superb. Harry looked like a real professional and performed the role of a Gaucho perfectly.

It’s one of our favourite dances and we hope you’ll like it too. Here are Harry and Aliona with their wonderful Argentine Tango:

Throwback Thursday – We’re (quick)stepping out with two of our tour judges!

Today excitement levels in my house are off the scale! My 4 yr old strictly fan , Bella, is off to see the tour with her grandma and auntie, and it’s been the topic of conversation all day in our house.

To get her in the mood for tonight’s show, I decided to show you lovely people (and her of course) this wonderful quickstep from two of our tour judges, Tom and Camilla. She wasn’t even born when these two competed and won Strictly, so (as a mum) I felt it only fair to show her some of their best bits.

For today’s Throwback Thursday, she’s picked her favourite of their dances, their Quickstep. Bella liked this dance because they were really fast and ran across the dance floor so quickly, they should have won a medal (as well as a glitterball!) She also liked Camilla’s dress because it was pretty and orange (not pink!) She liked the music and choreography and wants to dance like that when she’s older.

I think she’s chosen a great dance and I hope you will too. Here is Bella’s choice for today, Tom and Camilla’s quickstep. We both hope you enjoy it:

Throwback Thursday – A (Quick)Step Back In Time

We love watching Strictly and reminiscing about some of our favourite moments. Today’s Throwback Thursday is no exception. We’re going all the way back to 2006 (when some of our youngest fans weren’t even born!)

We admit to being closet Spice Girls fans, so when Emma Bunton appeared in series 4, we were huge supporters of her and Darren Bennett, who made it all the way to the semi-final.

Our dance today is their first competitive dance together, the Quickstep, where they topped the leaderboard and made a great first impression scoring a magnificent 33/40.

This dance was not only fast, but elegant, rhythmical and technically very good. We loved the Hollywood Glamour feel of the routine and hope you will too. Here are Emma and Darren with their fab-u-lous and fast Quickstep:

We hope you enjoyed watching that dance and would love to hear what you thought of it. Tweet @scd_support, or comment below. We look forward to hearing from you.

We can all get our sequins on and celebrate in the knowledge that our post strictly blues will be cured for another few weeks.

Every day this week we’ve shown you some of our favourite ever dances from the Strictly tour, and today’s is no exception. It’s the electric tango/cha cha/showdance from our Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour cast of 2014. We love a bit of Britney and this dance ticked all our boxes to become one of our favourite tour dances:

1) Great music βœ…
2) Fabulous choreography βœ…
3) Feathers and sequins (check out the pros costumes, we’re in love!) βœ…
4) Great dancing βœ…
5) All the cast on one stage at the same time βœ…
