Our Dancing Town – Skipton (A Review)

Those of you who follow our blog will know we’ve been following a new series on BBC Two, called Our Dancing Town.

If you’ve watched Gareth Malone’s The Choir, this follows a similar pattern and follows West End Actor and Choreographer Steve Elias travel around Yorkshire to help this county show its essence through dance.

Tuesday night’s show was the turn of Skipton to shimmy and show us what it was made of! Skipton is a beautiful traditional farming town and it was clear they had a huge dance community and a passion for dance!

Where as last week Steve had struggled to find people to take part from Barnsley, the people of Skipton were right behind him and came in their hundreds (and possibly thousands) to create a dance capturing their essence.

Along the way we met three people with phenomenal dance talent. We met Alice, a student who had studied ballet, modern and tap but had not danced for some time, Elizabeth, a trained ballet dancer who had to give up dance due to illness and Barbara who used to dance Jive but had not danced since her husband died.

Steve not only managed to create what was a brilliant dance tribute to Skipton, but he also reunited the farmers and market traders who had lost touch with one another.

It was great once again to see another community come together in dance and work together to produce what was a wonderful flashmob style production on the streets of Skipton!

If you watched the show, we’d love to hear what you thought of it. Tell us by tweeting @scd_support or commenting below. We look forward to hear from you. If you missed out, don’t fear, you can catch up on BBC iPlayer

Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour – A Review!

Wembley is normally the home to football, but for 2 nights this week it became home to the glitterball, as the Strictly Come Dancing Live tour came to the SSE Wembley Arena.

Santa was very generous to us this last year, and brought us 3 sets of tickets, one of which was to Thursday night’s show. We made sure we wore as many sparkles as was humanly possible (we were going to Planet Strictly after all!) and got ourselves in the mood practising The Strictly! We loved the tour in 2014, loved it even more in 2015 and this year it surpassed our expectations to be the best Strictly Tour show yet!

This year’s tour brought together 2 couples from Strictly Past (Frankie and Kevin and Jake and Janette) along with 5 celebrities from the most recent series (Ainsley, Anita, Georgia, Helen and Jay!)

It was a shame to hear that Natalie had to withdraw from the tour due to injury, however this was a blessing as we got to see another magical Strictly Partnership when Ainsley performed with Karen. These two definitely added to the whole atmosphere and entertainment value of the show. Granted that Ainsley is not the best technical performer, however he tries his hardest and always entertains with his performances. He sums up what Strictly is all about to a tee!
The show had moments of beauty such as Georgia and Giovanni’s gorgeous American Smooth, Helen and Aljaz’s ethereal Viennese Waltz and Jay and Aliona’s gentle Rumba. There were moments of pure entertainment perfect for Wembley, such as Frankie and Kevin’s rock’n’roll Quickstep, Jake and Janette’s Fearlessly Fab-u-lous Salsa and the brilliant beach inspired group routine. There were also many Gleb specials for all the ladies *goes hot and sweaty thinking of it.* There were also dramatic moments such as Frankie and Kevin’s spellbinding Tango, Anita and Gleb’s hot and fiery Paso Doble and Helen and Aljaz’s intense Tango. We also had moments of perfection, including THE Jive of Strictly history from Jay and Aliona. There were also some magical group dances, such as the “Hooray for Hollywood Dance” and the Wonderful Opening Group Routine which got us all dancing in the audience. With all this, what more could you ask for?

It wasn’t just all these moments that made us cheer and wave our 10 paddles in the air. The show was hosted by the very funny Mel Giedroyc! She made us literally cry with laughter with her many anecdotes, jokes, puns and contemporary dance moves. It got us thinking, if she and Claudia were ever asked to host Strictly together, what a laugh that show would be! It also made us want to start a campaign to Get Mel on Strictly 2016 (even if it does read that we want strictly to get a melon! We do like WatermelonπŸ‰)

One dancer’s pleas for votes, year after year have got better and are worth the price of a ticket alone. Yes, the lovely Kevin from Grimsby entertained us with his pleas for votes again this year. He also entertained us with his reaction to losing the night’s show to Jay (reminiscent of his reaction to his early exit from the Swingathon in 2013!)They really added to the comedy value of the whole show. We can’t wait to see what he has planned next year.

Credit must also go to the brilliant Strictly Wardrobe, Make-Up and Hair team, as well as the professional dance troupe, the judges and the brilliant Strictly Band and singers. Strictly is THE biggest and best show on TV at the moment, and this arena tour was the best ever thanks to not just the dancers, but all the team behind the show who help keep it sparkling!

For those of you who have never been to the tour before, we also got the chance to vote for our favourites. For my 5 year old superfan, her favourite dances were Georgia and Giovanni’s Charleston, Frankie and Kevin’s Quickstep and Ainsley and Karen’s Salsa as these moments made her smile the most. My lovely husband loved Jay and Aliona’s Jive and Jake and Janette’s Salsa. I loved Helen and Aljaz’s beautiful Viennese Waltz and Anita and Gleb’s Paso Doble. In other words, we voted for everyone as they were all our favourites.

We’d definitely give this year’s tour a 10/10 and a sparkly glitterball. It was the best tour ever and to quote my very tired 5 year old at the end of the evening “It was fab-u-lous with a capital F and more fabulous than unicorns!” I must point out that unicorns rate equal to strictly in her world and both of us can’t wait to see Strictly 2016 or the tour next year. *blocks off time in her diary* Now, when does next year’s tour go on sale?

Here are some of our favourite moments which we uploaded to our Instagram, Twitter and YouTube feeds:

If you’ve been to see the Strictly Tour, we’d love to hear what you thought. You can tweet @scd_support or comment below to let us know. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Pasha Kovalev: A Life Through Dance (a review by @serenepingu)

Last night, whilst I celebrated my tiniest monkey’s christening, my lovely friend got the chance to see the gorgeous, hot, talented, hot and amazing Pasha Kovalev, as well as Anya Garnis, Ryan Hammond, James Wilson, Marcella Solime and Leila Stewart when they waltzed into Watford. She kindly agreed to review the show for our blog. Here are her thoughts:

Pasha Kovalev: A Life Through Dance

The beautiful art form that is dance brings together the whole nation and Strictly has helped bring dance to our hearts. This was apparent to see in this wonderful show. As me and my mum arrived at The Watford Colosseum, we saw many fans, some dance lovers, some dancers themselves and some were Pasha fans (like us!)

The show takes you on a journey through dance seeing fab-u-lous Foxtrots, wonderful Waltzes, romantic Rumbas, passionate Paso Dobles, sensational Salsas and amazing American Smooths! The title of the show Life Through Dance, is easy to see in the performances. All the talented professionals have dedicated their lives to dance and their talent, emotion and performance left us feeling warm and fuzzy inside just like strictly does during the winter months. Dance really is good for the soul as well as the body!

As well as sublime dancing from the professionals, we also had the pleasure of being entertained by the very talented Village School of Dance and Drama, who performed two fun and energetic routines. To quote Whitney Houston, I believe that children are the future, and we’re pretty sure that some of these children may be on Strictly in the future.

Pasha got us on our feet and we can honestly say we left the room better dancers, as well as being entertained. Paula and Lisa who were lucky enough to get to dance with Pasha summed up how we all felt inside. We love Pasha and this show made us realise he’s not only an amazing dancer, but is also a lovely and down-to-earth person.

For us, our highlights had to be the strong and dramatic Paso Doble (featuring Pasha’s pecs!), the beautiful Rumba from Ryan and Marcella, the wonderful finale, the spectacular and sparkly costumes, as well as Pasha’s magical Glitterball! It was also great to see Anya Garnis performing with Pasha. Their partnership is electric, powerful and engaging for all the audience.

All in all, we had an amazing evening and would definitely recommend this show for Strictly (and Pasha) fans both young and old!

Puttin’ On The Ritz (@theritztour) a review by @janelottering

When we heard there was a new Strictly inspired show coming to the New Wimbledon Theatre, we were keen to go, but were gutted when we found out we couldn’t make the dates (#sadface 😞.) The lovely Jane went along and agreed to review the show for us.

Puttin on the Ritz New Wimbledon Theatre

Starring Robin Windsor Kristina Rihanoff Trent Whiddon Gordanna Whiddon and Pixie Lott

Puttin on the Ritz, is a mixture of music dance and song, covering the 1930’s 40s and 50’s. With music and songs from the amazing George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin.

A group of dancers take us through the above decades with toe tapping hand clapping songs. With wonderful performances from Strictly’s Robin Windsor, Kristina Rihanoff, Trent and Gordana Whiddon and Strictly contender Pixie Lott. There’s not just one highlight, but a series of fab-u-lous routines throughout the whole show.

This makes for an enjoyable and fun evening for all lovers of good music and dance, of all ages.

The whole show sounds amazing & being a huge fan of the 1940s and 1950s we want to go now! Putting on the RItz is now embarking on a Tour around the Uk. For full dates and information, please visit http://www.puttinontheritztour.com

If you’re going to the show or have been, we’d love to hear what you think/thought of it. Just tweet @scd_support or comment below to let us know.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!
